Palliative Care in Israel
Palliative care is a growing field in Israel. Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa all have hospices and there are home-care hospice programs in many smaller towns and communities throughout Israel. Among organizations in Israel active in this area are:
§ The French Hospital of the Notre Dame Convent in Jerusalem, which takes both chronic and terminal patients.
§ The Israel Cancer Association.
§ Since 1996, there has been an Israeli affiliation of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC). The EAPC sponsors and/or finances local palliative care activities.
§ The Temiha (‘Support”) Association which was founded in 1993 by the Society for Palliative Medicine.
§ Israel’s Association of Oncology Nurses, whose members work in hospital oncology departments, oncological home-care, pediatric oncology, palliative care and radiology.
§ Israeli health professionals are active in palliative-care research, and are increasingly represented at international congresses. Among the best known are Alex Waller and Nancy Karoline, whose book on palliative care has been recognized by the WHO as a basic textbook in the field; and Nathan Cherney. |
