Seminars and Guest Lecturers

International Collaborations

The senior hematology staff maintains close contact and collaborative efforts with scientists and physicians from the highest ranking institutions abroad. These relationships are an invaluable source of fruitful academic endeavors, as they establish the basis for joint research projects, leading to a high level of excellence in scientific publications and research grant applications. In addition, these collaborative efforts enable us to find outstanding laboratories abroad in which our Hematology Fellows can engage in research for a period of one to two years following the completion of the clinical portion of their training. All of these interactions have led us to form a nucleus of close mutual scientific collaborators. As an outgrowth of these relationships, renowned experts from all over the world are invited to give guest lectures, to join us in planning joint projects, or simply come to visit our clinical facilities to share their expertise with us.

The senior hematology staff has established and maintains ongoing close relationships with investigators and clinicians at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital, St. Jude's (Memphis), and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, among many others in the United States. In addition, we have warm relationships with equally prominent scientists in Europe: in the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, and others.

These guests may give a single lecture or they may participate in an annual lectures series, such as the Izak Memorial Lecture, or other lectures established to honor the memories of our dear colleagues.  Shmuel Gillis Memorial Lecture is being held on February every year and Yaakov Matzner Memorial Lecture is being held on November/December (organized by the Medical School Dean's Office).

Local Collaborations and Contacts

The senior staff maintains close relationships with all academic institutions within Israel, for exchange of ideas and for performance of joint endeavors. Our closest and most frequent contacts are, of course, with the scientists of the Medical School. However, our senior physicians have ongoing relationships and joint projects with such institutions as the Weizmann Institute of Science, and hospitals in the coastal region.

A weekly scientific seminar is delivered after Grand Rounds on Monday mornings in the Inpatient Department. This may be a lecture delivered by one of the Fellows or one of the senior physicians, on a timely clinical topic. Alternatively, a guest lecture from Israel or from abroad may be invited to speak on a research topic. These seminars are attended by all the Sharett Institute clinical and research staff, including physicians, graduate students, and medical students during their rotating elective.
