The prenatal tests include: Amniocenthesis, Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) and fetal-blood sampling.

These tests check the chromosomal setup of the fetus.

Women are referred to these tests for the following reasons:

1. Age 35 and up.

2. Abnormal results in first trimester screening (Nuchal Translucency) or in the second trimester - triple screen blood test (Alpha Feto Protein).

3. Abnormal ultrasound findings.

4. An hereditary disease in the family, by recommendation of a geneticist and after counseling.
Chorionic Villus Sampling and Fetal Blood Sampling tests are preformed upon a geneticist’s recommendation.

Every woman 35 and over is entitled to amniocenthesis funded by the ministry of health. The Ministry of Health also funds the tests when there is a high risk for a disease or a genetic defect in the family, as well as for certain ultrasound findings.

Women younger than 35 who are interested in amniocenthesis can take the test on their own expense. Most health service providers (Kupot Holim) offer discounts for women with complementary medical insurance.

The test can be performed from the 16th week of pregnancy. It is recommended to set an appointment for the test and receive guidance before it, in 12-14 weeks.
