Clinical Activity

The medical staff deals with all aspects of general endocrinology and diabetes; patient care is provided both within the in-patient wards of the Internal Medicine Department, and as consultation services in the other departments of the Hadassah Hospitals (Ein Karem and Mount Scopus).

Outpatient clinics in adult endocrinology and diabetes are held in both Hadassah Hospitals, and in the Modi'in Clinics.

There exists close collaboration with the endocrine clinics of the Department of Pediatrics, and with the endocrinologists / diabetologists of all the sick Funds (Kupot Holim) of the Jerusalem area, to whom weekly consultation services are offered.

The Endocrinology laboratories are divided into clinical service and research laboratories. The fully computerized clinical service laboratory, utilizes state-of-the-art technology for analysis of hormones, hormone intermediates, and other tests of interest in endocrinology, including molecular genetic markers for endocrine disease.

The laboratory service covers the needs of the wards of Hadassah hospitals as well as of outpatient clinics of the institution. High-volume endocrine laboratory tests, such as thyroid function tests, cortisol, pituitary hormones etc, are performed in the newly established hospitals' Central Laboratory in collaboration between the Department of Biochemistry and the Endocrinology professional staff.

The ambulatory testing Facility (Endocrinology day care) is equipped to perform more than 30 different dynamic endocrine stimulation and suppression tests. These tests are ranging from oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests to insulin induced hypoglycemia. Tests are performed by a highly specialized nurse and under the direct supervision of a senior endocrinologist.

The clinical interests of the service encompass all aspects of general endocrinology, including thyroid, parathyroid and pituitary disease, as well as type I and type II diabetes.

Recently, clinics have been opened, under the direction of Dr. Rivka Dresner Pollak, that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of  osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases.

A new clinic, run by Prof. David Gross, specializes in the treatment of endocrine malignancies, including carcinoid and islet-cell tumors, malignant pheochromocytomas, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid and adrenal cortical carcinoma.  In conjunction with this clinic, the E&M service now provides specialized tests related to these diseases, including specialized hormone measurements not available elsewhere in Israel (glucagon, VIP, PP and chromogranin).

The department’s laboratories also perform genetic diagnosis of MEN2, VHL and FMTC as well as Hyperinsulinism of Infancy.  This clinic provides a clinical service that is unique in Israel, making state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic modalities available to patients with these rare but devastating diseases.
