The Diagnostic and Pre-operative Evaluation Clinic which operates alongside the Emergency Department with full access to its facilities has three main purposes:
§ Prompt evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of sub-acute disease in Emergency Department patients who do not require hospitalization
§ Pre-operative evaluation in patients with serious or multiple medical problems (in cooperation with the Anesthesiology Department) to decide whether surgery is advisable, to monitor anesthetic approaches and to improve the patient's medical status prior to surgery.
§ Prompt next-day follow-up and monitoring of acutely ill patients examined and treated in the Emergency Department as an alternative to hospitalization, e.g. selected patients with pyelonephritis or mild to moderate congestive heart failure.
