Chronic (Chronic Tinnitus, Chronic Vertigo, Chronic Dizziness) – A medical condition such as Tinnitus or attacks of Vertigo that lasts 6 months or more.
Dizziness – A sensation of temporary imbalance without spinning. Usually the duration is short: a range of few seconds to few minutes. The patient is afraid of falling on the floor or ground, but usually he succeeds to prevent falling.
Floaters – Inability of the patient to ignore small particles that are floating inside the Vitreus Body of his eye. These particles really exist there. Many of the patients complain of a sensation of having “flies” in their visual field.
Hyperacusis – An abnormal degree of discomfort or aversion to sounds that would not be regarded as loud by average standards.
Masking – The capacity of one sound to mask perception of another sound. The greater the intensity of the masking sound, the greater its masking effect.
Menieres Disease – A medical condition with chronic course giving rise to 4 symptoms at least: recurrent episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss and sensation of plugged ears. Essential for diagnosis: rule out other medical condition (Tumor, Vascular Disease).
Objective Tinnitus – A Tinnitus sound that can be recorded by a special device, or detected by a skilled Physician who is using a special stethoscope. Usually this type of Tinnitus is pulsatile.
Ringing in the Ears – A common non medical term for “Tinnitus”.
Tinnitus – A sensation of sound that is related to the ears, head or the ears and the head. The sound of Tinnitus has no verbal meaning. The Tinnitus can be “Objective” or “Subjective” (See definition of objective tinnitus).
Tinnitus Masker – An electronic device that feeds sound into the ear, and designed to generate Masking sound (See definition of Masking) – a sound that covers the tinnitus.
TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy) – Training the Tinnitus patient to ignore the Tinnitus by focusing his attention at a different sound. The therapists of TRT are using a special electronic device that feeds a Non-Masking sound into the ear
Unsteadiness – A sensation that the floor or the earth is unsteady, in spite of the fact that there is no objective basis to that sensation ( no earthquake or explosion).
Vertigo – A sensation that the world is spinning, or yourself spinning in relation to the world.
