Community Dentistry is the specialty within dentistry which examines the levels of dental health and disease within the community, analyzes the variables associated with these distributions and plans programs aimed at promoting oral health of the community. A central tool in the methodology of measuring variables associated with community dental health is dental epidemiology and a central tool in the promotion of community oral health is preventive dentistry.

Israeli dentistry is currently undergoing dramatic changes in dental care delivery systems for all of the public. Decreases in the prevalence of the major dental diseases in Israel have been reported. Increasing interest in promoting community oral health programs is very evident.

The Department of Community Dentistry is involved in most community and public health dental activities in Israel. Staff of the department is actively involved in programs of municipalities, insurance companies, public clinics, the Israel Dental Association and the Ministry of Health.

The department is responsible for the two year program in dental hygiene.
