Director's Report

Dear Friends,

In 1995 The Natural Medicine Research Unit for the study of Complementary, Alternative and Integrated Medicine was established at Hadassah Medical Organization, Jerusalem by Dr Sarah Sallon (seen here on the right).

In 2005, in recognition of our contribution to this increasingly important field and in honor of our most generous donor, the Unit was officially upgraded and renamed "The Louis L. Borick Natural Medicine Research Center" (NMRC).

Since its foundation NMRC`s aims have been to scientifically research Complementary/Alternative (CAM), essential information if these therapies are to be successfully integrated into the conventional system.

As the first and foremost center in Israel devoted to this subject, our research projects have covered a wide range of subjects.

NMRC`s studies on Traditional Tibetan Medicine, an ancient system of health care, have been widely publicized, earning us the praise and encouragement of H.H the Dalai Lama during his visits to Israel.

Mind-Body Medicine has also become an important focus of our work, particularly the he way in which Stress Reduction techniques can be used as effective tools in promoting health and well-being amongst hospital staff and patients.

Most recently NMRC has been active in encouraging Natural Child Birth at Hadassah, contributing to courses for midwives and evaluating the effectiveness of this increasingly popular option.

The traditional uses of medicinal plants is the basis of our Middle–Eastern Medicinal

Plant Project, a unique program that scientifically studies local species for new medicines while conserving them for future generations.

Amongst our most recent achievements and drawing international attention to NMRC, has been the germination of a 2000 year old Date seed discovered at the ancient site of Masada on the Dead Sea.

Finally, NMRC`s Educational courses for staff, students, patients and the public, encourages an awareness and appreciation of Complementary and Alternative therapies based on evidence of their effectiveness and safety.

As NMRC looks forward to the next 10 years we believe that our work is of real importance in developing an open and integrated approach to health and healing.

In celebrating our 10th anniversary we wish to truly thank our great friend Louis L. Borick, whose generous support, encouragement and vision have allowed us to carry out so many of these programs.

Our sincere thanks also to all of our other donors and friends who have made and continue to make our work worthwhile and possible.
