Pictures at an Exhibition: Hadassah, the Early Years

01/08/2010

From now until the end of August, the Jerusalem Theater’s vast lobby is displaying “The Healing of the Daughter of My People – Hadassah, the Early Years,” a pictorial exhibit of some of Hadassah’s activities in pre-State Israel and during the first decades of the State.

Retired Hadassah employees Edna Guggenheimer, an operating room nurse, and Etti Kaplan from the Center for Familial Dysautonomia at Hadassah-Mt. Scopus, volunteered to oversee the monumental project of digitalizing all of Hadassah’s old photographs.

For the past two years, they have looked at literally thousands of photos. From among them they chose 40 for the exhibit, which documents the instrumental role the Hadassah Medical Organization and the women of Hadassah played in creating the nation’s medical and social welfare infrastructure.

Judith Steiner-Freud, a 1944 Hadassah Nursing School graduate who served as Dean of the Henrietta Szold-Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Nursing School from 1967 until 1983, and Dr. Nira Bartel also from the School of Nursing, provided Ms. Guggenheimer, the exhibit curator, with invaluable advice and information. Ron Krumer, HMO Director of External Relations, initiated and supervises the project, which is far from finished.
