An International Symposium

with World Leading Neurologists

will Mark the Occasion

 

 

The Symposium Will Honor Prof. Oded Abramsky who served as Head of the Department for 17 Years

 

 

The department of neurology at the Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, will celebrate next week its 70th birthday. To mark this historic milestone, an international symposium on neurology will be held in Jerusalem next week (Sunday – Tuesday, June 3-5).  Some 50 world leading neurologists and scientists will take part in the symposium, including Nobel Prize Laureates Prof. Aaron Ciechanover of the Technion, Haifa, Israel, and Prof. Stanley B. Prusiner of the University of San Francisco, California, USA. Participants will come from the USA, Canada, Scotland, Australia, Germany, Turkey, England, Greece, Sweden, Austria, Poland, Italy and Israel of course.

 

The symposium program includes lectures and presentations in a variety of issues on diagnosis, clinical treatment and research in neurology.

 

The department of neurology at Hadassah was established in 1937 by Prof. Lipa Halpern who emigrated from Berlin to Jerusalem. It was the first department of its kind in the region. Prof. Shaul Feldman – An Israel Prize Laureate – was head of the department from 1969 – 1988. Prof. Oded Abramsky succeeded him from 1988 – 2005. The current head of department is Prof. Tamir Ben-Hur

 

The department treats all types of neurological disturbances. It is equipped with cutting edge equipment, and its doctors are experts in a variety of sub-specialties.

 

In addition to a 27 beds hospitalization ward, the department also operates an outpatient clinic and diagnostic as well as service laboratories. Two important centers operate within the departmentr – the center for MS treatment, and the neurogeriatric center. In addition, there is a special unit for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke.

 

The senior physicians of the department are also members of the faculty of the Hebrew University Hadassah School of Medicine. Strong emphasis is also put on seminars for academic updating of the physicians and on research.

 

The physicians and scientists in the department are involved in various areas of research, such as autoimmune diseases of the nerve system; development of medications for Multiple Schlerosis; Preions diseases; degenerative diseases of the brain; vascular diseases of the brain; and stem cell transplantation as a treatment for brain diseases
