Baltimore resident Marlene Greenebaum knows full well how a diagnosis of breast cancer and the subsequent treatment impacts a woman’s life and the lives of her loved ones. She and her husband, Stewart, also know that the earlier the diagnosis and intervention, the better chance of survival, which is why they have been the moving force behind the creation of the Multidisciplinary Breast Center at the Hadassah University Medical Center that bears her name.
“We know so much more today than when I was diagnosed in 1990,” said Mrs. Greenebaum today. “Marlene’s experience made it important to us to help other women,” Mr. Greenebaum added. In Jerusalem to mark the opening of the new Center, they were accompanied by some of the Baltimore area’s leading cancer experts who shared their knowledge with their Israeli colleagues at a seminar on breast cancer research that preceded the dedication.
Dr. Kevin Cullen, Director of the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center at the University of Maryland, Dr. Angela Brodie, Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Maryland’s Greenebaum Cancer Center and Dr. Rachel Brim, Director of Breast Imaging at George Washington University Medical Center joined members of Hadassah’s multidisciplinary breast cancer team to present the latest information in the field.
“In the field of breast cancer there are a lot of difficult moments but there is a lot of hope,” said Dr. Tamar Sella, Director of the new Center. “We know that Marlene Greenebaum’s strength and courage will now give hope to other women.”
“Marlene, this dedication is truly in your honor,” said Past National President Marlene Post who brought greetings from National President Nancy Falchuk. “It is about your vision, your caring about other women and the possibilities for other women. We are all inspired by you, your love for Hadassah over many, many years, your generosity and the how you do everything with a full heart.”
“Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum are special people,” said Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, Director General of the Hadassah University Medical Center, “not only in their minds and in their hearts, but in the way they look at the world and their commitment to making this world a better place.”
Responding to the tributes. Mrs. Greenebaum expressed her pleasure in being able to help Israeli women with breast cancer share her experience in the best possible manner – to receive outstanding medical care in a personalized and dignified manner. Well-known for their support of medical, communal and Jewish causes in Baltimore – and their intense involvement with the Hadassah Medical Organization in America and Israel – Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum’s latest gift ensures that breast cancer diagnostics, treatment and research at Hadassah will meet her criteria.
