A first of its kind presentation was held at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital last week, where two laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomies were performed by Dr. Avi Benshushan, director of the Onco-gynecology unit at Hadassah, and Dr. Jacob Tangir, an expert in minimally invasive cancer and pelvic surgery (laparoscopic & robotic) from the Center for Gynecologic Oncology in Florida, USA.
The surgeries demonstrated the advantages of the surgical robot in a laparoscopic approach, and were broadcasted live from the operating room to the Tannenbaum Hall at Hadassah, where gynecologists from all of Israel were attending. The women who had the hysterectomies were discharged from the hospital a day and a half after the surgery in good condition.
Hadassah was the first hospital in Israel to use robotic surgery technology in January, 2009. Some 80 robotic surgeries were performed at Hadassah since, in the departments of general surgery, urology and gynecology.
