International Trials Demonstrate: Non-Invasive Hadassah Device Effective Measure of Liver Function

14/11/2010

Hadassah Physicians Present their Work at the AASLD Annual Conference.

Physicians from the liver unit at Hadassah University Medical Center presented results of their research in the annual conference of the American Society for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), held recently in Boston.

The Hadassah research group included Dr. Gady Lalazar, Dr. Meir Mizrachi and Prof. Yaron Ilan, Head of the Department of Medicine A at Hadassah, who was recently elected as a member of the Stirring Committee of the European Association for Acute Liver Diseases.  8,000 physicians from all over the world attend the conference in Boston is considered as the most important professional conference on liver diseases in the world.

An international research study involving 400 patients in 13 medical centers further proved the effectiveness of BreathID, a diagnostic device to measure liver function developed at the Hadassah University Medical Center. The study, conducted at eight leading American medical centers and five in Israel, measured BreathID’s diagnostic effectiveness in comparison with the conventional liver biopsy. The positive results will spur the continued development of the unique exhaler.

Prof. Yaron Ilan, Director of Hadassah’s Department of Medicine A, who headed the research team, presented the results at the annual convention of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases' (AASLD) in Boston last week. Internationally acclaimed gastroenterologists – among them three presidents of the AASLD – participated in the research.

BreathID is a non-invasive test that immediately assesses liver function, using the molecular analysis of the patient’s exhaled breath – obviating the need for blood tests or biopsies to measure disease or damage.

Prof. Ilan serves as Medical Director of Exalenz Bioscience Ltd., a startup company of Hadasit, the technology transfer company of the Hadassah Medical Organization.
