SIMEON

Jacob's blessing, Genesis 49

"Simeon and Levi, bretehen;
Their weapons are tools of lawlessness.

Let me not be included in their council
Let not my being counted in their assembly

For when wrathful they slew men
And when pleased thay maimed oxen

Cursed be their anger so fierce,
And their wrath so relentless.

I will divide them in Jacob
Scatter them in Israel"

Midrash Rabbah Bamidbar 2

His gem was topaz (PITDA),
his flag was green.
His emblem was the Shechem city.

Simeon

---------------------------------------------------

Shim'on ( Simeon ) is the second son of Lea. Simeon and Levi are characterized by their zeal, fast wrath and extremism. Their most famous deed is the cruel revenge they took on the city of Shechem. After Chamor son of the king of that city had raped and kidnapped Dinah, Jacob's daughter, Simeon and Levi put the whole city to the sword.

Afterwards, it were mainly Simeon and Levi who concieved the idea of terminating their brother Joseph. The biblical text blames ALL brother in that attrosity, but careful reading reveals that it was a "laud minority" that forced it's opinion on the majority.

However, it is not Simeon is cursed, but his "anger so fierce". Controlled doses of zeal and fierceness, are positive properties. Therefore Jacob scatters the decendants of Simeon and Levi among their bretheren.

After the People of Israel came into the promissed land, the weak tribe of Simeon failed to conquer the area alotted to it. Therefore the tribe of Judah invited Simeon to settle within the Judea area. The tribe of Simeon was thus dissolved and disappeared, according to the prophecy of Jacob.

The animals on the Window do not face each other. This signifies disquiet, tension.
