LEVI

Jacob's blessing, Genesis 49

"Simeon and Levi, bretehen;
Their weapons are tools of lawlessness.

Let me not be included in their council
Let not my being counted in their assembly

For when wrathful they slew men
And when pleased thay maimed oxen

Cursed be their anger so fierce,
And their wrath so relentless.

I will divide them in Jacob
Scatter them in Israel"

Mose's blessing, Deuteronomy 33,

Let Your Tummim and Urim
Be with Your faithful one

Whom You tested at Massah,
Chalenged at the waters of Meribah

Who said of his father and mother,
"I didn't see them",
His brothers he did not consider
Disregarded his own children.

Your percepts alone they observed,
And kept Your convenant.

They shall teach Your laws to Jacob,
Your norms to Israel.

They shall offer You incense to savor,
And whole-burnt offering on Your altar.

Bless, O Lord, his substance,
And favor his undertakings.

Smite the loins of his foes;
Let his enemies rise no more.

---------------------------------------------------Midrash Rabbah Bamidbar 2

His gem was smaragd (BAREKET).
His flag had white-black-red strips.
His emblem was the High-priest's breastplate.

Levi

Levi is the third son of Lea. Simeon and Levi are characterized by their zeal, fast wrath and extremism. Their most famous deed is the cruel revenge they took on the city of Shechem. After Chamor son of the king of that city had raped and kidnapped Dinah, Jacob's daughter, Simeon and Levi put the whole city to the sword.

Moses, Aharon the High Priest his brother and their sister Miriam the Prophetess are Levites. During the "Golden Calf" episode, Moses called upon everybody that remained faithful, to assist him in punishing the transgressors. The entire Levi tribe came to him, signifying that there was no sinner among them. The Mosaic text is to be understood thus: the Levites were ready to disregard brothership and friendship when called to fight the idol worship.

As a reward for the faithfullness, the tribe of Levi was appointed to serve the Sanctuary. The Levites had therefore no own land, but settled in settlemens set asside for them, within other tribes' territories. Thus the Jacob's prophecy was fulfilled.

The yellow color of the Levi's window symbolizes the gold user in the sanctuary. Many of the sacred objects there were golden. Gold was also the major component in the sacred outfit og the High Priest.

The animals are probably the sacrificial animals, such as the Scape Goat of the day of attonement, the lamb and the doves. The objects in the lower part of the window are the Tablets of the Law, which the Levites are supposed to teach to the rest of the people.

The Tablets of the Law are surrounded with candles, the common Jewish symbol of studying and researching, as it is said, Tora (means) Light.
